The morning will cover Logistics and will focus on the key areas that comprise logistics, namely; the planning function, transportation, technology, warehousing, inventory and metrics. Within the planning function, we will look at balancing the goals of good customer service, efficiency and minimizing costs. As part of transportation, we will compare and contrast the various modes (primarily motor freight) including routings and pricing. We will then look at the components of a good warehousing system, including the WMS-Warehouse Management System technology, stock locations and physical tracking systems. To address inventory management, the discussion will be on the types and functions of inventory as well as how to review and account for it. The session will conclude with key metrics in evaluating logistics' effectiveness.
Supply Chain Management
The afternoon will focus on best practices in Supply Chain Management, namely; incorporating the Lean/Six Sigma methodology, performing Cost Modeling, implementing Strategic Sourcing, negotiating and developing solid contracts, low cost country sourcing, Green procurement and the 21st Century talent pool. Lean Six Sigma has now replaced JIT-Just In Time and can be applied in the procurement function with the major focus to reduce supplier variability. As part of Cost Modeling, we will look at building TCO - Total Cost of Ownership models for key commodities to determine the real cost of doing business with suppliers. As advocated by major consulting companies, we will review the seven step strategic plan for souring in order to drive value. We will build contracts that not only have the required boilerplate, but also provide added value such as cost savings and performance attributes. We will answer the question, what is the real advantage in low-cost country suppliers and how Supply Management can also be viewed as a profit center in its investment recovery efforts. The session will conclude with desired skill sets for Supply Managers of the 21st Century.

As founder of SCE (Supply Chain Education.), Woods has worked with major corporations such as Alcatel, Boeing, Fujitsu, Halliburton, Ingersoll-Rand, Atlas Copco, Verizon and Pertomina - The Indonesian owned oil entity, in the areas of supply chain and materials management, traveling extensively in Asia and the former Soviet Union. He has also founded the current on-line learning initiative that has been a huge success with such companies as Halliburton, Ingersoll-Rand, Atlas-Copco and Verizon, resulting in both a U.S. and world-wide roll-out with approximately 700 participants, primarily in the areas of C.P.M, CPIM and Six-Sigma and the new credential, CPSM. Woods is one of the first group to be a Certified Professional in Supply Management (CPSM) as well as a Certified Purchasing Manager (C.P.M.), both through ISM - The Institute for Supply Management and is certified in Production and Inventory Management (CPIM) through APICS - The Operations Management Society. He has a degree in Industrial Management from the University of Alabama, with a minor in Economics. He currently resides in the Dallas area.
