MARSHALL, Texas (9/04/13) - The inspiration and desire to write a book is unique and different for every writer. For Teri McKinley, the motivation to write came out of a close relationship with her mother, Crystal Bowman. The two have co-authored a children’s devotional book titled, My Mama and Me: Rhyming Devotions for You and Your Child. The published work is the first for McKinley but her mother has been writing children’s books for over 20 years.
According to McKinley, who serves as a Financial Aid Counselor at East Texas Baptist University, the book is divided into four sections focusing on different parts of the Christian faith. “Each section is designed to help mothers answer questions that children often have about Christianity,” said McKinley.
The sections include: Can You Tell Me about God? Can you Tell Me about Jesus? What Does God Think about Me? How Can I Show God I love Him?
“There are multiple devotions in each section. Every devotion features a Bible verse, a rhyming lesson that helps answer the main question, and a fun activity for the mother and child to do together. The book concludes with a special mother’s prayer for her children,” shared McKinley.
McKinley’s love for writing was sparked by encouragement from her mother. “As her daughter I was able to witness the impact her writing had on readers. English was always my favorite subject in school, and my passion for writing grew through academics. My mom continually encouraged me to pursue writing opportunities and introduced me into the publishing world when she began asking me to proof read and edit her books. She commented on my natural eye for literature and we always discussed how fun it would be to co-author a book someday.”
This mother-daughter time through the years eventually led to the concrete idea that became My Mama and Me.
“The book was born out of the close relationship I have with my mom, and all the questions I asked her about Christianity while growing up,” McKinley said. “By the example of my own mom, I believe that parents play a vital role in the spiritual development of their children. My motivation to write this book with my mom was to assist mothers in having conversations with their little ones in order to lay a strong foundation of faith.”
When McKinley was able to hold the published work for the first time it was a happy and humbling time for her. “Excitement doesn’t begin to describe the feeling I had when I held the book for the first time! It was the first moment I truly grasped the weight of the opportunity I had been given. Pride, joy, and giddiness were the feelings that washed over me. I also felt a huge sense of gratefulness to the Lord—I couldn’t believe He would use me, a young woman in East Texas, to reach children in this way,” said the published author.
McKinley and her mom have been discussing co-authoring another book since they both had so much fun collaborating on this one. “Writing this book with my mom was an incredibly fun process but our true desire is for My Mama and Me to make a spiritual impact. If one child is able to further his or her relationship with the Lord or a mother is better-equipped to have faith conversations with her child, we would consider this work a success.”
My Mama and Me: Rhyming Devotions for You and Your Child is available at most Christian bookstores and online at www.christianbooks.com and www.amazon.com. The book is illustrated by Phyllis Harris and published by Tyndale House Publishers, Inc.
