Specializing in helping you live an energized, healthy and passionate life!
"As a holistic health and nutritional support counselor I lovingly guide and support clients as they make positive lifestyle changes to feel good, heal from illness, make better food choices and create a balanced healthy and happy life."
I know it has been a while since my last newsletter. I have been very busy working privately with clients and also busy with continuing education classes in nutrition. The field of nutrition is very vast and new research is always uncovering new important information. The field is constantly changing and I have always sought to study with the very best as well as work to stay informed of the latest information regarding health and nutrition.
When I first started my holistic nutrition business 6 years ago, a few medical doctors informed me that I was 10 years ahead of them regarding nutrition. I am certainly very grateful to all of my clients
who have chosen me to help them with their health, as well as grateful to my friends who have referred patients and loved ones. Without them, my business would not be able to continue. If you know of someone in need of nutrition or lifestyle consulting, please let them know about me.
For those of you who do not follow me on my Facebook, Twitter, Google+ or LinkedIn accounts, you can keep up with me best through those social networking sites as I regularly post information and updates. Please connect with me to show your support for the work that I have been doing to help people.
My latest media opportunity appears in this month's Growing magazine. The magazine is a national farming magazine that has a circulation of 20,000 with also an online presence.
The writers and editors really did a great job on the article and I hope that you will take a few minutes to read it - click here!
You may remember that my mother died on April 11, 2013. Since that time, I have been going through the healing process. There is not a day that goes by that I don't think about my mother. Every day I catch myself wanting to tell her something, share a client success or even the recent article in Growing magazine. It has been a big adjustment that I am still working on.
I started writing a newsletter back in May but then became very busy and was unable to finish it. I want to thank everyone for the many kind and supportive messages and cards that I received when my mother died. I really greatly appreciate your support so very much.
If you would like to see the memorial video that I produced for my mother's memorial service, please click here.
My mother was not well for 10 years. She had renal failure and a host of many other health issues including high blood pressure, diabetes and a dissected aorta. I remember when the hospital took this photo to hang above her in the room. Mom thought it was a great photo and even brought it home! I am glad she did. I keep it on my desk so that I can see her smile every day and think about what we went through. She did look great in this photo compared to how she had looked. She was recovering from a surgery to remove a golf ball sized gall stone that blocked her small intestine. I miss making her the curried red lentil soup that she loved and even hearing the sound of her oxygen machine.
It is extremely difficult to try to live without kidneys as the body has such a very difficult time maintaining homeostasis (ie regulating blood pH, pressure, production of hormones, blood glucose levels, fluids, excretion of toxins, and sodium levels. This is why most people with kidney disease actually die of heart failure. You might not be aware but the kidneys work very closely with the cardiovascular system and they also produce two important hormones - Calcitriol (an active form of Vitamin D) & Erythropoietin needed for red blood cell production.
Kidney disease is most often not detected until function declines to 25%. Once nephrons are damaged, new ones do not grow. Check out this video explaining kidney function. Diabetes & high blood pressure are the two most common causes of kidney disease. Learn the many causes.
Taking care to eat a healthy diet NOW and avoid harmful toxins such as alcohol, cigarettes and drugs can help you prevent damage to your kidneys and prevent chronic disease later in life.
If you are having some health issues, be sure to check your kidney functioning. I have worked with a number of clients who actually had early stages of kidney disease but did not know it even though the signs were there in their lab reports.
Please don't wait until you only have 25% functioning of your kidneys to care enough to take care of them!
If you or someone you love needs help with kidney diets, please get in touch with me. I have a lot of experience in this area and can help you.
Optimal Wellness Through
Are Foods Making You Sick?
Artemis in the City offers food and chemical sensitivity testing, also known as intolerance testing or antigen allergy testing, to clients based anywhere within the United States!
The antigen allergy testing is a test that is highly sensitive for assessing which foods, chemicals, molds, and functional herbs you may be intolerant or sensitive to. Food sensitivities or intolerances affect over 80% of the population.
The Antigen Allergy testing has really added so much to my services and ability to help people. I have helped hundreds of people prior to the testing but this helps us hone in on the problem areas very quickly. We are all bio-individually different and what is healthy for some is harmful for others. It is hard to believe but healthy foods like garlic, flax oil and yes EVEN KALE can cause problems for some!
I personally had my blood drawn today for two antigen allergy panels - (the Platinum Comprehensive which tests for over 320 antigens and the 50 Female Herb panel). I am really looking forward to my results so that I can customize my health and nutrition plan even better!
Food Intolerances are a hidden underlying cause of many health issues. Get tested to know what is best for you!
Find out what foods, chemicals, molds or functional herbs trigger inflammation in your body! Everyone benefits from this very accurate testing!

Meaning of Holistic Health & Nutrition
Holistic is an approach that is concerned with a "whole" versus "parts." In healthcare today, specialists treat people for various body parts and for symptoms (acid reflux, migraines, body pain, constipation, allergies, high blood pressure, low thyroid etc) and very little consideration is given to the whole person or uncovering the root cause of the symptoms. Holistic Health methods, such as Holistic Nutrition, focus on addressing whole body systems (mind, body, spirit) to help people live balanced healthy lives. Holistic Health and Nutrition methods focus on the implementation of nourishing whole foods and healthy lifestyle habits to help people overcome the root cause of illness and disease with the understanding that the body heals as one and not in parts.
Holistic Nutrition is rooted in ancient healing systems such as Chinese Medicine, Ayurveda and Nature.
In my holistic health & nutrition counseling practice, I integrate many food and healing approaches to help my clients that are based on both eastern and western dietary theories and also scientific evidence.

"When you experience working one-on-one with Danielle it is almost difficult to know where to begin when desiring to leave a testimonial regarding the totality of the experience. After a 6 month program my primary reflective thought is that of Hippocrates quote, "Let food be thy medicine, thy medicine be thy food." At 38 years old I found myself in a miserably debilitating state of health to which nutrition held the keys to my recovery. When I started my program the journey ahead was unclear but Danielle's broad education, work history and keen knowledge of all things health related enabled her to serve as an advanced scout in an area of health and wholeness that was previously uncharted territory in my life. The guidance and vast knowledge I obtained from her has improved my health, turned my life around and has served not only as a catalyst for change but has permanently impacted my outlook on the reality of food and how it directly affects all facets of my health. I feel armed, aware, educated and truly enlightened by what Danielle has taught me and I honestly no longer view the world around me the same. I feel honored and privileged to have been under her teachings but more so to be able to now call her friend."

"I was recommended to Danielle Heard by friends who knew I was struggling with pre-diabetes and could not lose weight. I took many supplements recommended by my nutritionist and exercised but nothing changed. My husband offered to work with Danielle as a couple so he could support me. A year later we can say that Danielle's instruction and personalization of our eating habits and needs have changed our lives. My A1C levels are normal. My husband no longer takes cholesterol medicine. I no longer take hundreds of dollars worth of supplements and we enjoy preparing our meals using whole foods. Our doctor was quite pleased during our yearly physicals this summer! Thank You, Danielle!"
- Rose & Charlie Griffin, Oceanport, NJ
"I was experiencing a lot of fatigue, some pain and generally not feeling well. I had tried changing my diet on my own, but came to the conclusion that I really needed some professional guidance. I know Danielle from graduate school so I contacted her for advice. She helped me analyze my current diet and we immediately made some changes. Through her advice, coaching, guidance and demonstrations (she showed me how to juice and took me shopping at a health food store), I was able to make some immediate changes in my diet and began to feel better almost immediately. She also spent a lot of time teaching me the theory of food. That is, how the food you eat has a direct impact on your emotional and mental well being. I learned a lot from Danielle and will continue to seek out her advice."
- Mitch Kent, New York City, NY and Philadelphia, PA
"I have attended all of Danielle's workshops and had six months of counseling. I have learned so much from her about food and how it affects our health. She has done the research. One of my goals was to reduce my neck pain and to be free of pain medication. I have been able to do that. She has introduced new healthy foods that we never had before. For the first time in years my husband's cholesterol numbers and triglycerides are within normal range after only 4 months and that's with no medication. If you care about your health, you need to hear what Danielle has to say. I am so thankful that I found Danielle."
- Connie Heidbreder, Lake Cherokee, TX
"Well, where do I begin? As all of us have certain needs with health issues and not eating nutritious foods, I had unwanted weight. Of course that's where my interest began with Danielle. I thought I knew how and what to eat properly. What a surprise I had in store for me! Danielle has a wealth of knowledge as a well educated and well informed holistic health counselor, not to mention her degree as a natural whole foods chef. She is willing to work with you in recipes of foods and even surprises you with a recipe for a 'sweet surprise.' I really enjoyed sessions on food (and how to prepare), what are quality meats and where to find them and sharing movies and articles on how food is our medicine.
Danielle was very professional in her sessions and always helpful by answering my 'silly' questions and getting on my level. Her direction and correction always made me look forward to my next of eight sessions with Danielle.
Juicing as a way of life became so interesting after experiencing her demonstrations, and I have purchased a great juicer! By the way, the juices were delicious!
Best of all, her teaching each session was personalized for me. I was an individual treated 'special.' Thank you Danielle!" - Sheila Laughlin, Longview, TX
"Working with Danielle has been a life changing experience for me. I was down and out, so to speak. I always felt really tired, wasn't sleeping well, my stomach was always upset and I just plain didn't feel good. Emotionally, I felt desperate for a change but didn't know where to begin. I knew I didn't want any fad diets or quick fixes that never last. I decided to give Danielle a try and in no time I felt like a new person. Taking advantage of her wealth of knowledge let me focus on getting well instead of pouring over books and articles that may or may not have been beneficial.
Her passion for life and wellness is catching! I have a ways to go still, after all, I didn't get here overnight. But in the first three months I began losing weight, sleeping better, and most importantly feeling better. I would strongly recommend Danielle's services to anyone serious about their health and lifestyle.
I remember Danielle telling me early on that once I got used to eating healthy, I wouldn't miss the junk I normally consumed. Naturally I didn't believe her....I mean really?? Who wouldn't miss a gigantic greasy hamburger dripping with fat and loaded with carbs? But you know, she was right. When I caved in to old habits and ate garbage, I actually felt terrible! I was stunned. My body has a mind of it's own.
I feel I gained a wealth of knowledge without having to do all the hard work. Again I say, if like me, you're tired of feeling bad, not having enough energy to get through the day, not sleeping well and just generally feeling blah and sick all the time, give Danielle a try. It will change your life!"
