STEVE DEAN and his wing man, Carl Best, turn to fly past the crowd in the east side bleachers at Buckeye Stadium as a preliminary event to the annual Independence Day Fireworks Celebration and Air Show on July 3 sponsored by the East Texas Yamboree Association. This year the display concluded to the strains of “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” in commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Battle at Gettysburg, the high water mark of the Confederacy. Patriotic music was sponsored by Etex Communications. The Gilmer Area Chamber of Commerce sponsored a concession stand. VIP concessions were sponsored by Dubya’s Barbecue and Gilmer National Bank. Brookshire's was a sponsor also. Gilmer ISD hosted the event.
