COMES TO HAND a new booklet titled 2013 North East Texas Visitor and Events Guide.

Professing to cover a 30-county region including Upshur, this 5-by-7-inch booklet is printed in four colors on high quality paper.

Of 31things listed to see and do, a Gilmer attraction, Watts RV Park and Recreation Area, comes in as No. 13. It is touted for nature walks, fishing, outdoor grilling, horseshoes, volleyball and bird watching.

EVENTS ARE, quite naturally, presented in calendar sequence. Gilmer’s 76th East Texas Yamboree, which will be held this year on Oct. 16-19, has a paragraph on facing pages that include the Oct.12 Athens’ East Texas Arboretum Fall Festival and Black-Eyed Pea Cook Off (a potentially delicious tongue-twister), the Autumn Stroll Festival in Canton, the East Texas Oil and Gas Blast in Carthage and the Oct. 17 Pumpkin Glow at the Ellis Home and Garden on North Eastman Road in Longview.

THIS GUIDE has half-page descriptions of the sponsoring towns, including Gilmer. In the unsigned entry from the Gilmer Area Chamber of Commerce, one learns that, “The charming and historic downtown square beckons you to come and spend the day.

Gilmer is the county seat of Upshur County and our historic courthouse sits in the center of our red brick streets on the square. Begin your day at our Historic Upshur Museum and work your way around [the square] . . will need to stop for lunch at one of several wonderful eateries and enjoy some Gilmer hospitality.

“Our famous East Texas Yamboree begins on the third Thursday of October. Over 100,000 guests come from far and wide to crowd the square and celebrate with pageants, parades, carnival rides, music, dancing contests and plenty of great food.

“You’ll want to try our unbelievably delicious specialty, yam pie!

YOU HUNTERS will definitely want to visit us in February when we have a fun and exciting sporting event, our Wild Hog Hunt. The judging is fun for people of all ages, even if you aren’t a hunter.

“As December rolls around, you’ll want to be in Gilmer for Christmas activities … Santa Claus Parade, North Pole Art Contest, Breakfast with Santa, Gingerbread House Contest, Business and Home Decoration Contest and, of course, Old St. Nick himself.

“We welcome you to visit Gilmer and get to know the friendliest people in East Texas.”

That’s a lot to live up to.
