The Piney Woods Raycers, the Gilmer High School solar car team, are busy reengineering and modifying their vehicle, in hopes of making it more competitive during this year’s Solar Car Challenge.

GHS science teacher Criss Bartley told the Gilmer Rotary Club about developments in the GHS solar car during Rotary’s lunchtime meeting Tuesday.

She pointed out that it is an ongoing program.

She said it is a common occurrence to have to explain why there is a “y” in “Raycer. Once explained, it makes sense to them, Mrs. Bartley said.

Each year, solar car students compete in cross-country events. This year’s will be July 23-30.

Mrs. Bartley said that, in the past, the Piney Woods team’s vehicle had problems meeting the turning-radius requirements.

To try to remedy that, the team is busily shortening the wheelbase to try to achieve the 15-meter required turn radius. They also are replacing ATV tires with motorcycle tires.

The cross-country race this year will originate at the Texas Motor Speedway near Dallas, on July 23, and will proceed to Los Angeles, Calif., over the next eight days.

Communities along the way include Snyder; Carlsbad, N.M.; El Paso; Florence, Ariz.; Wickenberg, Ariz.; Palms, Calif.; S. Pasadena, Calif.; and Los Angeles, where it is projected to conclude on July 30.

Ability to compete does not come cheaply. The team needs funds for meals and lodging along the way.

Also, they are willing to help out by providing concessions or other help at your events. They’ve raised about $200 selling concessions at “Cruizin’ the Square” events in Gilmer, and have received help from both the Trull and Walmart Foundations.

They are also selling ads on the side and front and rear panels of their Raycer.

For example, a 10-by-6-inch placement is $250. Smaller ads go for as litle as $50, for a 5-by-3-inch space.

Donations or ad-purchase checks can be made out to Gilmer High School, 850 Buffalo St., Gilmer, TX 75644.
