Ewell Community News
The community of Ewell has been rocked this week by the devastating loss of our most active volunteer, Larry Neighbours. Most of us know him as Uncle Larry, as he has been affectionately dubbed by the children (and adults too I suppose) ever since I can remember. Larry devoted his life to our community, and I know that I for one have always thought of him as the glue holding us all together. He was an outstanding Fireman, being a Volunteer Fire Fighter on Ewell's VFD since 1985, and is remembered by his fellow fighter fighters as the "First one in, Last one out". He has served as their treasurer for some time now, and was meticulous with the details of helping the VFD run smoothly. Uncle Larry also served as a member of the Board of Directors for the local community center, the Ewell Service Club. There, he wore many hats, sometimes tractor driver, maintenance man, concession stand worker, and even at times, babysitter for all the little ones running around the grounds during playdays or barrel races. He was a trusted advisor to many and was always quick with sound advice. He would often say, "When God sends you a rowboat, don't wait for the speedboat." It was of great importance to him that our community be united, and he was determined to see that through. Now that Larry has gone to heaven to watch over us all, we are tasked with doing just that. We are celebrating his life at the community center Wednesday, May 1, 2013 from 6-9 pm with a memorial service and dinner. All are invited to come and bring a covered dish if able. Thursday, May 2 at 1pm the Ewell VFD will be holding a fireman's funeral for Larry. We encourage all local Fire Departments to attend and help us all honor Larry's memory.
