Gilmer clinched the District 16-3A baseball championship with a 2-1 walk-off win Saturday over Bullard as Jamel Jackson streaked across the plate ahead of the tag by Bullard’s catcher, Trevor Rumbelow.

With Gilmer (20-6, 10-1) in first place, Bullard falls to second with two losses to the Buckeyes, and Spring Hill, with the only district win over Gilmer, holds on to third.

After getting only one hit off the Panther pitcher Zach Eschberger for six innings, Gilmer combined two hits, a steal and a walk for the winning runs.

With one out, Skylar Hollis grounded to the short stop, who bobbled the ball just long enough for Hollis to beat the throw. Two pitches later, the speedy Buckeye dove head first, under the tag to steal second base.

By the time Mitch Lange walked, Hollis had reached third on a passed ball. Jamel Jackson came in to run for Lange as a courtesy runner.

On a full count, Bryce Tomlin dropped a hit in short center field, allowing the two runners to score, and for the celebrations to begin.

Colin Hardin finished the night with the win, after giving up one run and five hits.

Gilmer had only three hits, but they clustered two together for the winning runs.

Gilmer finishes the regular season at Kilgore Friday and will enter the playoffs next week.
