DALLAS – Tom Pauken, Republican candidate for Governor, called on Lt. Governor David Dewhurst to allow an up or down vote in the Texas State Senate on the educational reform legislation which overwhelmingly passed the Texas House.

Pauken stated, "Sponsored by Rep. Aycock, HB5 provides for much needed reform of our public education system in Texas. It recognizes that one size doesn't fit all when it comes to educating young Texans and that excessive emphasis has been put on a high stakes testing system which all too often results in test learning replacing real learning. The House legislation allows for multiple pathways to a high school diploma, increases opportunities for vocational education, and returns more control to local school districts."

Pauken added, "For some reason, the Lt. Governor is delaying a vote on this legislation in the Senate even though a majority of State Senators support what the House already has passed. I call on David Dewhurst to allow an up or down vote on this legislation, or something similar to it, next week."
