Thursday is deadline for registering to vote in the May 11 Gilmer municipal election, said City Secy. Kathy Hoover.

This deadline also applies to city and school elections set for May 11 in Texas.

Voters register at the Upshur County Tax Assessor-Collector’s Office on Titus Street.

On the city ballot are the mayoral race between incumbent R.D. (Buck) Cross and former City Councilman Steve Dean, and 15 proposed amendments to the city charter.

Voting on election day will be held at Gilmer High School. Early voting will be held at the Gilmer ISD administration building from April 29 to May 7.

Voting for the city election will be held at school buildings because the city had anticipated that it would have a joint election with the school district, Mrs. Hoover said. However, as state law allows, Gilmer ISD canceled its May 11 school board election because all candidates were unopposed.

Mrs. Hoover said voters are already accustomed to voting at the high school for city elections.
