Independent documentary directed by Landry Gideon slated to follow Texas high school theatre departments throughout the 2012-2013 school year.

Austin, TX – April,  2013 – Each year over 1,000 schools across Texas compete in One Act Play (OAP), one of the world's largest play festivals. “The Show Must Go On” presents an inside look at the drama that unfolds between high school theatre directors and their ensembles as they travel across Texas for a three month long elimination style tournament culminating at the state competition in Austin. Director Landry Gideon and cinematographer Andrew Miller are currently capturing the grueling process that is the UIL One Act Play competition by following these schools to clinics, contests and rehearsals.

Hundreds of thousands of students, parents, and teachers have been involved in OAP since its 1927 inception. Several current and former industry professionals can trace their acting roots back to this competition including Academy Award winner F. Abraham Murray, Emmy Award winner Jim Parsons and Tony winner Elizabeth Davis. In many states, theatre is not considered a competitive sport, but in Texas it is. From the moment each play is cast in the fall through the State Championship at the end of May, the crews eat, sleep, and breathe nothing but theatre. OAP is about hard work and dedication, and this film aims to show that to the world.

In 2012, the Austin Film Society awarded “The Show Must Go On” with a grant from the highly competitive Texas Filmmakers Production Fund. The film was chosen by a panel of judges comprised of noted filmmakers and producers. “Up until now, we have been able to capture everything as a two man crew, but the need for coverage of the competition across the state will require us to add a few more camera operators to the team. We want the best ones we can get and those folks come with a price tag,” says Gideon about why launching a crowd funding campaign is necessary.

A Kickstarter campaign will be launched in April to raise money for the rest of the production which includes travel expenses, equipment rentals, permit fees and hiring additional cinematographers and crew to cover the contests and follow the schools chosen for production. A Facebook Page, Twitter account and website have been created to spread the word about the competition and progress on the production.
