LONGVIEW, Texas, February 08, 2013:  Renewing your wedding vows is a way to display how deeply in love you both still are, a way to say that if you could do it all over again you would not change a thing, a way to show that you love a person just as much as you did the day you got married. On Valentine’s Day, a dozen beautiful wives in their 80s and 90s will hold elegant bouquets of flowers as they stand at the altar next to their husbands to renew their wedding vows.

Buckner Westminster Place is abuzz with anticipation of the Valentine’s Day Vow Renewal Ceremony. 87-year-old Boots Early and 86-year-old Billye Early, a couple who has been married for 67 years, looks forward to rekindling the sweet remembrance of their wedding day in 1946.

“Valentine’s Day is a special day, a special reminder, to remember the ones

you love the most,” said Billye Early, a resident of Buckner Westminster Place. “This is the perfect day to renew our wedding vows. While Valentine’s Day may not be our anniversary, it is certainly a day of romance. We are delighted to renew our vows at the altar next to other devoted couples within our community.”

“In the 67 years we have been married, Billye and I have not had any problems we could not overcome,” said Boots Early, a resident of Buckner Westminster Place. “Before we got married, we were long distance for three years while I was overseas in the service. The ceremony will give us and other couples the opportunity to express the values and commitments we made when we were first united with our spouse. It will be a day where we strengthen our love and dedication for each other.”

Staff members of Buckner Westminster Place have planned the ceremony to be much like an actual wedding. The participating residents will dress in their Sunday best and will be lined up at the church altar hand in hand with their spouses. The chaplain will then lead a traditional exchange of vows with a few modifications. Afterwards, residents will enjoy a decadent wedding cake, sparkling grape juice, and elegant music performed by a harpist.

“We were married the traditional way, in a church in Linden, Texas,” said Boots. “However, churches did not have air conditioner units back then. It was so hot we could not even light the candles. They were bent over from the summer heat! I am looking forward to a refreshing ceremony and reception at our current church.”

“My Daddy was very partial to me,” said Billye. “When Boots came over to ask him for permission to marry me, my Mother teasingly said, ‘Well, she’s not a very good cook,’ to which my Daddy replied, ‘why, she makes cornbread better than cake!’ This time Boots will not have to get permission from my Daddy because we are already married!”

The Vow Renewal Ceremony is scheduled for Thursday, February 14th at 10:00 a.m. at Buckner Westminster Place. A dozen couples will renew their vows together at the altar.

“We are delighted to provide this special experience for the residents, especially on a day of nationwide romance,” said Wes Wells, executive director of Buckner Westminster Place. “Many of the residents have been married for a long time, and this will give them the opportunity to renew the vows that have guided them in their strong commitment to each other.”
