The Kilgore College Softball Team will kick off its inaugural season Wednesday, Jan. 30, at Stream Flo Field in Kilgore.

Festivities will begin at 12:30 p.m. with the introduction of the team and remarks by KC President Dr. Bill Holda.

The first pitch will be thrown by Holda and KC Board of Trustees President Will Roberson.

The doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m. versus Grayson County College.  Admission is free.

“This is a great time for Kilgore College athletics and for the history of our college,” Holda said. “The opening day of an inaugural season is a once in a lifetime event in the history of Kilgore College and we are excited about the bright future of softball and women’s athletics at our institution.”

The Rangers are coached by Leslie Messina, who previously served as Texarkana College’s head softball coach the last eight years.

At Texarkana College, Messina’s teams won five conference championships, two regional championships and had the school’s first two appearances at the NJCAA National Tournament.

KC will take the place of Texarkana College in the Region XIV East Zone because Texarkana College dropped all intercollegiate athletic programs after last school year.

“We are so excited to begin a new tradition of athletic excellence with women’s softball,” said Jimmy Rieves, athletic director. “Coach Messina and the players have worked really hard in the offseason, and we are expecting a very competitive group that will represent Kilgore College with excellence both on the field and in the classroom.”
