Dr. Charles Allen Reed has been pastor of First Baptist Church in Nacogdoches for more than 30 years, and he has been writing devotionals in The Nacogdoches Daily Sentinel for just as long.

Reed recently published a collection of these devotionals titled, “Reed All About It!” which mirrors the title of the weekly devotional in the paper that bears its name.

He started writing devotionals while living in the town of Quitman and working at the First Baptist Church there. Shortly after he began writing devotionals, he moved to the Oldest Town in Texas when he answered the call to serve as the pastor of First Baptist Church in Nacogdoches. It was here that he felt the call to publish his devotionals on a weekly basis in The Daily Sentinel.

“There were two reasons for my doing the weekly article,” Reed said. “One is for encouragement and inspiration, as it is a Christian devotional. And the other is it served as an ad for our church that gave the name, address and time of services for our church to encourage people if they didn’t have a place to go to, they could come and worship with us.”

His passion for preaching and encouragement started at a young age. When he was just 17 years old, Reed worked for his neighbor, E.P. Wootten, making window screens. Wootten served as a bi-vocational pastor in his free time and talked with Reed at length about the ministry. “He talked with me and said if I just can’t get away from a sense that that’s what God wants me to do, it’s a good indication that he is calling me to be a minister.”

Reed began his undergraduate degree at East Texas Baptist University in Marshall, receiving a degree in sociology with a minor in speech. While in college, he was called by Midway Baptist Church in Gilmer to present sermons at their church. “I was a junior in college when I went to Midway as a pastor. From there it just took off.”

Following his undergraduate studies, Reed attended Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth. It was here that he received his Master of Divinity and then went on get his Doctorate of Ministry.

Aside from the creation of his devotionals, Reed has had four sermons published in Zondervan Pastor’s Annual. He has also had one printed in a collection of sermons regarding missions.

“Reed All About It!” consists of 366 daily devotionals “geared toward those wanting to read the gospel, or good news about Christ and Christianity and how it applies to life.” Reed made sure to end every devotional with “A Little Humor,” because God likes to laugh too, he said.

“Reed All About It!” may be purchased at Amazon in book form or as an e-book from Kindle. For more information, please phone 936.564.7379.
