If I could choose a single moment from our revolution that set the course for our success, it would be: “And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor.” -Declaration of Independence
With the help of Webster’s 1828 Dictionary, I hope to convey the depth of this moment: “And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence [In order to sustain this Declaration, along with a solid and unshakeable belief that God himself ‘governs’ and cares for His children and caused a thing to exist and is necessary to continue its existence], we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor [we promise to give our life and all we have for one another and, with hands raised before God, we promise to one another our word is true].
“I have sworn upon the altar of God eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man.” -Thomas Jefferson
Please read: The Real George Washington, by Parry. And, then: The Real Thomas Jefferson, by Allison. It is rewarding to read our history in the Founder’s own words. Their faith in God and one another and their passion for “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness” will inspire you.
