During the respite between Thanksgiving and Christmas, I thought I'd write about my favorite sweet snack. Chocolate. No other word invokes the thoughts of pleasurable eating the way chocolate does. Of all the comfort foods, it reigns supreme. When the world gets ugly, chocolate will always be there.
Sure cake is delicious and ice cream is divine, but I can make both better simply by making them chocolate! Or covered with chocolate sauce or syrup. That is how awesome chocolate is.
Chocolate is literally comfort food. It is demonstrably soothing to the angry, sad or troubled beast within us. A bag of bite sized Snickers will back me up on this, I'm pretty sure. Don't like caramel or nuts? Then try a bag of Oreo cookies.
I prefer Snickers to most any other method of ingesting chocolate, but there are many others which will do just fine. Sometimes I feel like a nut. Almond Joy is good for that. Sometimes I don't. Mounds is good for that. Sometimes I feel like a million dollars. Millionaires are good for that. Sometimes I'm not moving so fast. Turtles are great for that. When on the go, that roll of Rollo's in the pocket will do just fine. I've got to have some chocolate nearby.
You'd better not lay a finger on my Butterfinger. Peanut butter and chocolate? I want two! They sure get stuck in my teeth, and that's a good reason I carry floss in the car.
I've never been a fan of Milky Way. Too much air and not enough chocolate. Ditto for the Mars bar. Baby Ruth is fine, but only if there's no Snickers in the machine. If there's no Snickers and no Baby Ruth, and no Almond Joy, and no Mounds, and no Turtles, and no chocolate covered peanuts, and no Butterfinger, and no Rollo's, then I'll take that Hundred Grand, I suppose.
Candy, as you may have surmised, is my favorite method of ingesting chocolate. Ice cream would be my second method. But not as the flavor of the ice cream. Make mine vanilla ice cream, Blue Bell if you've got it. Then add chocolate syrup. Not that hot sauce which starts turning solid when you pour it on the ice cream. I want room temperature chocolate syrup on my ice cream. And don't be stingy with the syrup! It's a renewable resource.
I'm not much of a cookie eater, and when I do eat cookies, they're more likely to be one of those soft ones that isn't chocolate and does not have chocolate in it. In a crunch I'll eat Oreos, of course. With or without milk, but again, "where's my floss" when I'm done.
Chocolate cake is sometimes tremendous, but sometimes simply too dry. When it is moist, chocolate cake is wonderful. But dry chocolate cake requires being washed down with something, and the only drink which tastes good with chocolate cake is milk. Most of the time when chocolate cake is being served, milk isn't. Brownies are great when moist - straight up or when covered with vanilla ice cream.
If you're worried about what to get someone for Christmas, don't worry. Get a gift tin, make something chocolate, and give it to them. Odds are they will eat it, like it and appreciate it. If they don't eat it, someone near them will. No one ever worried about the chocolate going bad before it got eaten.
