David Fisher used the public comment section of the meeting of the Upshur County Commisioners Court Friday to discuss ideas he had to save money for the next fiscal year.
The commissioners had already made some amendments to the budget in earlier items in the agenda. One item for $7,400 was a request by the Upshur County Librarian Mark Warren to move the funds from one line item to another where he could purchase new books.
The funds represented a savings in purchasing a different software system to handle the checking in and out of books and cataloging of items.
Instead the commissioners chose to retain the $7,400 in savings to try to balance the budget.
Fisher opened with the idea the commissioner reduce their salaries in the new budget, an idea which they had already approved.
Fisher pointed out that he keeps a chainsaw in his truck so he can clear trees in the roadways when they block his path.
“We need to make Upshur County a place people will come to,” he remarked as he continued his list of items.
More information on the meeting will follow in Wednesday’s Mirror.
