LONGVIEW, Texas, August 23, 2012:  For two months, residents at Buckner Westminster Place have been hard at work making dolls for children in need.  This week, a dozen residents delivered 29 dolls to Hiway 80 Rescue Mission.  Geraldine Triplett, 89-year-old Buckner Westminster Place resident, taught other seniors how to create the dolls from scratch, and Triplett made all of the clothing herself.

“I felt great.  The joy on those children’s faces was something else,” said Triplett.  “They smiled so big, and they were so excited to get the dolls.   I am proud of my fellow Buckner Westminster Place residents who spent a lot of time helping with this project.”

Hiway 80 Rescue Mission has an emergency shelter that helps women and children get back on their feet.  Single women, domestic violence victims, and women needing financial assistance can stay at the shelter with their children.

“We are grateful to receive any donation from the community,” said Gary Crim, volunteer coordinator, Hiway 80 Rescue Mission.  “It is important for the children to feel comfortable, and the dolls will definitely help.”

Buckner Westminster Place chose the charity because the cause is close to the residents’ and administrators’ hearts. The residents have found a sense of satisfaction, and their accomplishment inspires the staff.

“It was wonderful.  The kids just lit up,” said Wes Wells, executive director, Buckner Westminster Place.  “The residents carried the dolls in, and gave them to the children.  We all joined hands and prayed.”
