A 20-year-old Gladewater man was arrested Thursday following a chase by a Department of Public Safety trooper and Upshur County constable.

Timothy Pliler was charged with evading arrest detention with a vehicle. He was out of the Upshur County Jail on $2,500 bond on a similar charge from Jan. 9. In that incident, he led a trooper on a high-speed chase in which he ran several stop signs.

“On Feb. 5 at approximately 2:35 p.m. while on routine patrol, I went to assist Trooper Chris Callaway,” said Pct. 1 Constable Russell Harris. Trooper Callaway was attempting to stop a gray Ford truck occupied by two white males.

“The truck was fleeing from the trooper at a high rate of speed,” Harris said. “As the car chase turned south off of U.S. 271 onto North Point Pleasant Road, I was headed north on North Point Pleasant Road.”

At this time, Trooper Callaway reported that the white male driver was pulling over, coming to a stop.

“As I arrived, I observed the driver, wearing a black t-shirt and blue jeans as described by the trooper, running south to North Point Pleasant Road,” Harris said.

Harris said that as he approached the subject, he ran east into a wooded area.

“I then gave chase with my patrol unit until I came to the wooded area,” Harris said. “I exited my vehicle and began foot pursuit, ordering the subject to stop.”

The suspect ran into a swampy area in a slough.

“I pursued the subject approximately 100 yards into the slough and was able to catch him in about two feet of water,” Harris said.

He arrested Pliler, who Trooper Callaway identified as the driver of the fleeing vehicle.
