The world-famous Harlem Gospel Choir will perform at the Whatley Center for the Performing Arts at Northeast Texas Community College on Saturday, Feb. 7.

Plan to bring the whole family to enjoy this energetic and uplifting show featuring some of the country's finest gospel singers. The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $30 for adults and $10 for age 17-and-under and NTCC students. The show is underwritten by Texas Heritage National Bank.

"This season we've had a great variety of shows at the Whatley Center. The Harlem Gospel Choir is well known all over the world and we are very excited to bring them to Northeast Texas," Carolyn Franks, Director of the Whatley Center, said.

The performance will include songs of inspiration and hope such as: This Is The Day, I Believe I Can Fly, Jesus Can Work it Out, Happy Day, Joyful Joyful, Amazing Grace and O Lord We Praise You. The theme of the performance is bringing people and nations together and giving something back.

The Harlem Gospel Choir was founded in 1986 by Allen Bailey, who got the idea for the choir while attending a celebration in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at the renowned Cotton Club in Harlem. The choir is a gathering of singers and musicians from various black churches in Harlem.

The choir travels the globe sharing its message and raising funds for children's charities. In 2003 the group was granted a private audience with Pope John Paul II in recognition for their charity work. The Harlem Gospel Choir has also performed with famous artists like Lyle Lovett, Diana Ross, Harry Belafonte, Brooks and Dunn, Ashford and Simpson, Bono and the Chieftans.

Although the choir has more than 40 members, it tours with a compact format of nine singers (three sopranos, three tenors and three altos) and two musicians (keys and drums). Each singer and musician is a talented and professional gospel singer, representative of the wonderful talent to be found in the churches of Harlem.
