The band was created in 2002 by band leader Calvin Sexton, who attended the University of North Texas, where he earned a degree in music.

Since its inception, the band has received a standing ovation at the Apollo Theater in New York City; performed at the Denton Jazz and Arts Festival, Fort Worth Main Street Festival, and Taste of New Orleans in San Antonio.

It has played at such notable venues as the Gypsy Tea Room in Dallas and Luna Live in San Antonio. The band has shared the stage with ReBirth Brass Band, Brave Combo, Mingo Fishtrap, Bowling For Soup and South FM.

Leader Sexton’s talents include arranging and composing music, booking and managing the band, and being its high energy front man.

Born in Birmingham, Ala., Calvin has had a diverse professional career. Because of financial issues lhe withdraw from school. This led him to San Jose, Calif. in 2001. Mr. Sexton taught at the Music School of Sunnyvale, Calif. Later he joined the 153 local Musicians’ Union and began performing with blues legend, Lady Bo, female guitarist for Bo Diddley; Mark Russo; Cathedral of Faith Church San Jose and Jubilee Community Church San Jose. He played in theater shows and with Community Big Bands around the Area.

Later he began working for Princess Cruises and Carnival Cruises to earn money and return to college to earn his degree in 2003. The island music he heard influenced his songwriting and helped develop ideas for a youthful and spirited band.

Other professional experiences have allowed him to record with Erykah Badu, and perform on the same stage with Earl Klugh, Stanley Turrentine, Gladys Knight, and Brave Combo. He also performed at many churches that include St. Emmanuel Baptist Church, Denton, and New Beginnings Church in Irving.

Calvin’s activities are much broader than only performing music. He was an award winning swimmer with the Birmingham Park and Recreation Board, Eagle Scout, and a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc.

In college, he was an interim-president of the National Pan-Hellenic council at the University of North Texas, President of the APBM (Association of Professional Black Musicians) student organization, in which he assisted in organizing and booking world famous opera singer, Denyce Graves, to the campus. Later he began his own business, Inner City All Stars/ Brighter Star Music, which he contracts musicians for performances and books the Inner City All-Stars.
