A Gilmer High School senior was killed in a one-vehicle wreck early Sunday morning.
According to Department of Public Safety Trooper Adam Bell, who investigated, Justin Wayne Heidelberg, 18, of Gilmer was eastbound on FM 2088 when he lost control. The undercarriage of the 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix he was driving struck a large tree and the vehicle caught on fire.
The accident occurred just east of Coyote Road, about 7.4 miles northwest of Gilmer.
The accident occurred at 1:16 a.m. Sunday. Heidelberg was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:41 a.m. by Pct. 1 Justice of the Peace Wyone Manes.
The DPS report listed unsafe speed as a contributing factor in the wreck.
The body was taken to Croley Funeral Home in Gilmer.
Trooper Bell was assisted at the scene by DPS Sgt. Vester Roney of Mt. Pleasant, Trooper Canchis Strelow of Pittsburg, Upshur County sheriff’s deputies and Upshur County Fire Marshal Paul Steelman.
