Man captured after car chase

A man who police say stole a car in Gilmer Dec. 23 was captured after a car and foot chase.

According to Gilmer Police Investigator Roxanne Warren, Sgt. Mark Rider was attempting to make a traffic stop at about 2:47 a.m. at U.S. 271 and Old Coffeeville Road, when the car fled from him.

“He was trying to stop it because a tail light was out. The kid fled and went across a yard and a field,” she said. “He stopped and bailed out with Sgt. Rider after him on foot.”

After the foot chase, Rider captured Justin Wright, who said he was from the Dallas-Fort Worth area and was in Gilmer visiting relatives, she said.

The 17-year-old was driving a car that had just been stolen in Gilmer, Mrs. Warren said.

Wright was charged with evading arrest detention in a vehicle, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and driving under the influence.

On Dec. 19, a woman reported to Gilmer police that she had lost her wallet, valued at $26, and $30 in cash that was in it. She attempted unsuccessfully to located it at her job.

The last place she remembered seeing the wallet was at the Exxon station in East Mountain at 11:54 a.m. on Dec. 19.

Because her wallet also contained a checkbook and a debit card, she called her bank to cancel the card. The bank advised her the card had been used at Walmart and several ATMs in Gregg and Harrison Counties. The value of the transactions totalled $1,356.

She was advised to contact Longview and Marshall police to initiate an investigation into debit card fraud.

At 1:23 a.m. Saturday, a 22-year-old Gilmer was arrested and released on $1,500 bond after a small baggy of marijuana was found in her vehicle.

On Dec. 24, a 19-year-old man and an 18-year-man, both from Gilmer, were arrested for possession of marijuana under two ounces.

On Dec. 19, police found a black and tan backpack containing some business papers.

On Dec. 20, an Ipod valued at $150 was stolen from a vehicle parked in the 700 block of Mitchell St.

On Dec. 20, someone in a black Chevrolet pickup drove off from the Fina Station on U.S. 271 S. in Gilmer without paying for $39.36.

On Dec. 21, a vehicle was burglarized in the 500 block of West Tyler St. Taken were $3 in change and a $4 pack of cigarettes.
