The property on Brandon was donated by the Leo Jones Estate and is the first Tyler Headquarters for the 63 year old organization. The event marks the kickoff for the 2010 Toys for Tots toy drive. Donations will be accepted through Friday, December 3.
“We are thrilled to be celebrating the opening of our Tyler location, said Commandant Larry Adkins”. “This new building fills a need not only for Toys for Tots but also for the many low income children in Smith County.”
The Ribbon Cutting Ceremony will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. The program presentation will include a welcome from Commandant Larry Adkins with comments by Congressman Louie Gohmert District Attorney Matt Bingham and City Councilman Sam Mezayek will also be in attendance.
Adkins stressed that all donations made locally stay in the community. “We purchase the toys from local businesses, and all the toys are distributed to children in the local community.”
The Marine Corps started the Toys for Tots campaign in 1947 when post-World War II veterans decided to collect toys for children in Los Angeles. It has grown into a national campaign that benefits low-income children across the country. Last year approximately 3,500 toys were distributed to children in Smith County.
“I can’t imagine a child not having a present to open on Christmas Day. That would be devastating to me. Toys for Tots makes sure that doesn’t happen”, Adkins said.
Child registration continues through Friday November 5th. To be eligible, children must be under 12 years of age and must reside in Smith County. Smith County residents should call 2-1-1 or 903-534-9977. Residents of Henderson County may contact the Henderson County Help Center at 903-675-4357 for more information. Volunteers may contact Commandant Larry Adkins at (903) 894-6764. Toy drop-off locations include Big Lots, Toys R Us, Family Dollar, and the Better Business Bureau office. About The Marine Toys for Tots Foundation
Toys for Tots, a 63 year national charitable program run by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, provides happiness and hope to economically disadvantaged children during each Christmas holiday season. The toys, books and other gifts collected and distributed by the Marines offer these children recognition, confidence and a positive memory for a lifetime. It is such experiences that help children become responsible citizens and caring members of their community. Last year the Marine Corps fulfilled the holiday hopes and dreams of 7.4 million less fortunate children in nearly 700 communities nationwide. For more information, visit www.toysfortots.org.
