NTCC hosts land judging contest

AREA HIGH SCHOOL students gather information for a recent land judging competition at a recent FFA contest hosted by Northeast Texas Community College. More than 25 schools participated in the event.


The Agriculture Department at Northeast Texas Community College hosted approximately 250 high school Area VI Future Farmers of America (FFA) members for a judging contest on April 1, 2008.

Students had the opportunity to participate in forage, land or woodland competitions which included significant involvement of area Natural Resources Conservation Services (NRCS) offices and their personnel. ÊThe forage contest was held on the NTCC campus, and the land and woodland contests were held at the Hudson Old farm off FM 1735 south of the collegeÕs campus and farm.

FFA Area VI counties that participated included Bowie, Camp, Cass, Delta, Franklin, Gregg, Harrison, Hopkins, Lamar, Marion, Morris, Panola, Rains, Red River, Rusk, Smith, Titus, Upshur, Van Zandt, and Wood. Schools represented at the contest included Avery, Avinger, Beckville, Canton, Carthage, Chapel Hill NE, Clarksville, Como-Pickton, Daingerfield, DeKalb, Detroit, Edgewood, Gilmer, Harmony, Hughes Springs, Jefferson, Linden-Kildare, Marshall, Miller Grove, Mount Pleasant, Mount Vernon, New Boston, New Diana, Ore City, Paris, Prairiland, Queen City, Quitman, Rivercrest, Sims, Sulphur Bluff, Texas High, Union Grove, Van, Waskom, West Rusk and Winona.

In the Forage competition DeKalb took first place while Avery finished second and Hughes Springs third. In the Land competition Avery earned the top spot while DeKalb came in second with New Diana finishing third. In the Woodland event Avery took first, with Simms winning second and Harmony taking third.

NTCC would like to thank the area NRCS offices, Hudson Old for opening his farm up for the land and woodland contests, and AEP Swepco for providing gift bags, snacks, and bottled water for the contestants.
