Elementary students 'mindstorm' with Lego roboticsGilmer Elementary Science Specialist, Nancy Tevebaugh and Lisa Smith, Technology teacher demonstrated the Lego Mindstorms Robotics program at the Gilmer Elementary PTO meeting April 3. First launched in 1998, Lego Mindstorms for Schools has helped countless students grasp science, technology, engineering, and math concepts with hands-on, naturally motivating building sets, programming software, and curriculum relevant activity materials. The group plans to participate in area robotics competitions, where youngsters have time to explore and invent their own robotics solutions. PTO parents and their children programmed the robots and then watched in amazement as the robot completed the task. GISD has implemented the LEGO robotics program in third through sixth grades this spring with plans to expand the program next year. The group plans to participate in area robotics competitions, where youngsters have time to explore and invent their own robotics solutions. “To prepare our students to live and work in our technologically advanced world, schools find creative ways to cover important areas of science, math, technology and engineering,” Mrs. Tevebaugh noted. “At Gilmer ISD, we feel that robotics education is one solution to this challenge.”
