Three injured in wreckThree people were injured, one of them critically, in a 3-vehicle wreck just after 1 p.m. Friday (April 18). June Smith, 82, of Leesburg was transported to East Texas Medical Center in Tyler, where her condition was still serious on Monday. Her husband Oscar Smith, 79, was hospitalized and released. According to Gilmer Police Officer J.B. Griswold, who investigated, a Kia Sedona SUV Mrs. Smith was driving was hit by an 18-wheeler. The impact knocked her vehicle into a Chevrolet mini-van driven by Darlene Barber, 54, of Gilmer. She was transported to East Texas Medical Center in Gilmer with non-serious injuries. The driver of the 18-wheeler, Rusty Martin, 32, of Pittsburg, sustained minor injuries, but refused medical treatment. The accident occurred at the intersection of U.S. 271 and Hwy. 155 at the south edge of Gilmer. Griswold said Monday he was continuing his investigation, and he did not know at that time who was at fault and whether tickets would be issued.
