Food drive set for May 10
Gilmer City letter carriers will again help Stamp Out Hunger! across America on Saturday, May 10.
Now in its 16th year, the effort is the nation’s largest single-day food drive, having collected more than 836 million lbs. of food from postal customers since its inception.
Gilmer letter carriers collected more than 5,000 lbs. last year and is slated to hit the 6,000 lb. mark this year.
All donations are delivered to Tri-County Community Action to help people in Upshur County.
To help Stamp Out Hunger! in Gilmer this year, participants may leave a sturdy bag containing non-perishable foods next to their mailbox prior to the time of regular mail delivery on May 10.
Food items should be in non-breakable containers, such as boxes and cans. Local letter carriers will then collect donations from homes across the city and deliver them to Tri-County Community Action.
According to American’s Second Harvest — the nation’s food bank network — more than 35 million people are food insecure, hungry or at risk of hunger. About one in four people in a soup kitchen line is a child.
