A woman, driving a dually truck while towing a horse in a trailer, led officers on a high-speed chase from Gilmer to West Mountain Saturday afternoon before spikes flattened the vehicle’s tires and she was arrested, said Gilmer Police Sgt. Marc Rider.

Edee Coleen Hurst, 49, of Spendora, was charged with felony evading arrest/detention with vehicle and two misdemeanors—unlawful carrying of weapon and running a red light—said the Upshur County Sheriff’s Office.

She was released from Upshur County Jail Sunday on bonds totalling $11,500, set by Pct. 1 Justice of the Peace Wyone Manes, the office said Monday.

Rider told The Mirror Saturday night that the chase started after he received a report that a woman had pointed a pistol at a motorcyclist—an incident which turned out to have happened in Titus County after having been thought to have occurred in Upshur.

When he saw the Dodge pickup involved in the incident southbound on U.S. 271 near McDonald’s in Gilmer, he pursued it and turned on his overhead lights, but the driver wouldn’t stop, he said.

Rider gave this account of subsequent events:

The truck ran a red light at the intersection of Hwy. 300 and U.S. 271 and the chase continued on U.S. 271, involving speeds as high as 90 miles per hour, but averaging only 55. The pursuit eventually involved three to four units each from the Upshur County Sheriff’s Office and Texas Department of Public Safety, and two Gilmer police cars manned by Rider and Officer Larry Sewell.

The DPS laid out spikes near the intersection with Willet Road, and the truck stopped near the intersection of FM 726, about one to one-and-a-half miles from where it hit the trap.

The woman surrendered without incident, and the horse, along with two dogs in the truck, were taken to Spencer Veterinary Clinic near Gilmer. Two guns were also found in the vehicle following the chase, which probably lasted 10-15 minutes and ended at 3:22 p.m., Rider said.

He said he was unsure if drugs or alcohol were involved.

A spokeswoman for the Titus County Sheriff’s Department in Mt. Pleasant said Tuesday morning that Ms. Hurst hadn’t been arrested on any charges from that county. The spokeswoman said she didn’t know whether Ms. Hurst had been or would be charged with anything there.
