We should never become discouraged and give up when things aren’t working out as we anticipated. There is another old saying, “If you don’t first succeed try try again!” My grandmother Wilson, in encouraging us to not give up, would say, “There’s always a way!”
A young boy may aspire to be many different things during his formative years. One moment he wants to be a fireman; and then a policeman. He images himself to be many different things. As he reaches young adulthood his mind may still not be made-up as to what career he wishes to pursue. But sooner or later he must settle on a worthwhile career. Otherwise he will find himself to be a “Jack of all trades and master of none.” Not a one of us wants to end up being someone else’s flunky. Don’t get me wrong, a good handyman is often needed and appreciated. All I am saying is “Don’t complain later if your ambitions weren’t very high. Generally speaking life gives us back just what we put into it.
To get ahead in life will require some sacrifice and much effort. So, if you’re young its time to stop day dreaming about what you’d like to accomplish. It’s time to do something about making your dreams come true. Those of us who are a little bit older may still have dreams of our own to fulfill.
The saying, “When one door closes, another opens”goes back to a collection of proverbs of S. Palmer (1710).
