After heavy rains Friday, Upshur County Judge Dean Fowler announced Friday afternoon he has lifted the county's outdoor rural burn ban effective immediately. However, a spokeswoman for the City of Gilmer said the ban on burning inside city limits remains in effect.

Fowler said he lifted the rural restriction after conferring with chiefs of some fire departments in the county.

Noting that the Upshur County Commissioners Court, which recently extended the ban after Fowler imposed it Aug. 9., is not scheduled to meet again until Sept. 30, the judge said lifting the ban could give residents a "very small window" of time to burn trash and debris accumulated over the past few weeks.
