Some 13,521 meters served by the Gilmer-based Upshur-Rural Electric Cooperative lost power Friday morning as five substations went out, said Upshur Rural Office Mgr. Melissa Reeves.

A loud boom was heard on a line north of Diana, and whatever ocurred there was believed to have caused the outage shortly after 8 a.m., she said. The cause remained under investigation late Friday morning, Ms. Reeves added.

The affected substations included East Mountain, Diana, Kilgore, Bethlehem (east of Gilmer), and Glenwood, the office manager reported.

By shortly after 11:20 a.m., she said, power had been restored to the East Mountain and Kilgore substations, but 6,412 meters remained out. However, all were expected to regain service within an hour, Ms. Reeves said.

Upshur Rural serves slightly more than 45,000 meters, representing about 32,000 actual customers, in 10 counties.
