The Upshur County Appraisal District’s proposal to raise all employees’ salaries by five percent is drawing fire from Pct. 3 Comm. Frank Berka, who is urging citizens to attend a public hearing on the district’s proposed budget Monday.

The hearing is set for 1:30 p.m. at the district office off FM 49, just inside Gilmer city limits.

“I object to the pay raises when we’ve (the county government) had a million-dollar shortfall, and our (county) employees haven’t had a raise in almost seven years,” Berka told The Mirror Thursday.

“Upshur County taxes pay 27 percent of that (the Appraisal District’s) budget,” Berka added. Noting that the Upshur County Conservative Coalition was notifying people about Monday’s hearing, he said, “We’re trying to get people there to talk about it.”

UCAD Chief Appraiser Sarah Curtis told The Mirror Thursday she would save her comments on the matter for Monday’s hearing.
