While Dr. David Jenkins was the overwhelming favorite, many mentioned their childhood minister as well as some famous ministers including Oral Roberts and Billy Graham.
A thank you note for the club’s donation to the Gilmer Area Chamber of Commerce for the annual Easter egg hunt was read by Jeannie Smith. Mrs. Skinner was recognized by Mrs. Hamil and members applauded her for her recent election victory in which she was selected to serve as Justice of the Peace in Pct. 4.
Bettye Lou Smith announced that the Annual Spring Trip would be on April 3 and include a buffet lunch at Big Pine Island and a Caddo River Boat Tour in Karnack.
Following the business meeting, Mrs. Fowler gave a delightful book review of The Good News from North Haven by Michael Lindvall. Mr. Lindvall is a Presbyterian minister living in Ann Arbor, Mich. The book consists of a series of humorous essays describing events he experienced during his career as a pastor. Mrs. Fowler focused her presentation on an essay entitled “The Christmas Pageant.”
It seems the small church featured in the essay had given the exact same Christmas Pageant directed by exactly the same member for 47 years. When a group of young mothers took over (without the blessings of the past director) chaos ensued but ultimately the presentation survived and was enjoyed by all.
Immediately following the program members were served chicken salad in croissants, fresh berry tarts, spinach dip in a bread bowl, crackers, nuts, hot cider or coffee from a lovely tea table.
Those present in addition to members mentioned above were Cal Arnold, Annette Breazeale, Mikie Clark, Sandy Dean, Betty Finney, Janice Gage, Rita Lewis, Cindy Murry, Betty Orms, Mary Ann Patterson, Rolinda Shipp, Melinda Smith,Raye White, Barbara Williams and Margo Carter.
