Members of the Twentieth Century Club held their annual Opening Meeting and Guest Day on September 20 at the Silver Alley Event Hall. Members and their guests were greeted by the hostesses Tamara Moler, Bridget Fowler, Barbara Williams, and Irma Williams. A lovely registration table featured an elaborate autumn floral arrangement in an antique urn. Mrs. Moler served as Mistress of Ceremonies and following the invocation called on Abby Stewart to conduct the roll call and introduction of guests.

Next, First Vice-President Annette Herrmann introduced the Twentieth Century Club’s Yamboree Queen Candidate Kayla Nicole Smith, her mother member Melinda Smith, and her grandmother member Bettye Lou Smith. Miss Smith was presented with a gift from the Club and expressed her appreciation for both receiving the nomination and the gift.

Mrs. Moler called upon Jean Hamil to deliver the traditional President’s Message. In keeping with this year’s Course of Study, “Expanding Our Horizons”, Mrs. Hamil challenged members to think, behave, and move in a different direction rather than be stuck in their own comfortable ruts. She quoted Oliver Wendell Holmes statement that “a mind once stretched by a new idea, never regains its original dimension”. In closing, she asked that by this time next year, members be able to measure the expansion of their horizons personally, as a club, and as a community.

Mrs. Williams introduced the Honorable Lauren Parish, Judge of the 115th District Court who presented the day’s program. In a light hearted manner Judge Parish discussed the current political situation with regard to entitlements and other controversial topics. Her humorous presentation was entertaining as well as thought provoking and in keeping with the day’s theme also encouraged an expansion of one’s horizons.

Following the program members and guests were served from a lovely tea table featuring three elegant floral arrangements in shades of persimmon, peach, and gold complimented by lush greenery. Refreshments served on silver serving trays included orange soufflé, asparagus wrapped in fillo dough, hot chicken salad, assorted truffles, cheesecake squares, spiced nuts, white grape punch, and coffee.

Members and guests attending not previously mentioned included Betty Parish, Muriel Lenhart, Paula Mathis, Merle Cross, Reba Cochran, Connie Duke, Mikie Clark, Cal Arnold, Raye White, Nell Yocum, Sandy Jenkins, Betty Finney, Bonnie Gorman, Lynda Phillips, Jeannie Smith, Margo Carter, Heather Baugh, Mary Ann Patterson, Georgia Duke, Linda Clemons, Abby Stewart, Elaine Stewart, Lou Lovell and Sue Snyder.
