Texas State Representative Trey Martinez Fischer on Sham Trump-Abbott Election Audit

Austin, TX — Just hours after Former President Donald Trump called on Texas Governor Greg Abbott to add a “Forensic Audit of the 2020 Election” to the third special session call, the Texas Secretary of State’s office announced that it would conduct a “full and comprehensive forensic audit” on the 2020 election in four large Texas counties [Texas SOS, September 23, 2021].

These four counties alone—Collin, Dallas, Harris, and Tarrant Counties—represent over one-third (36.1%) of the state’s population.

All four counties are incredibly diverse, with white Texans comprising less than 40% of their collective population. Only Collin has a slight majority of Texans who identify as white and non-Hispanic [2020 U.S. Census]:

“Just as political redistricting is getting underway, Republicans continue to criminalize voters of color. Abbott’s administration now wants to play detective a full 11 months after the 2020 election,” said Texas State Representative Trey Martinez Fischer. “This is about using the Big Lie to lay the groundwork for carving up communities and silencing Texans at the ballot box. Nearly 40% of all Texans of color reside in these four counties. We don’t need a crystal ball to see what is coming next: Republicans will lie that Black and Brown voters are committing fraud and that district lines must change to be fair. Two big lies don’t equal fair elections—it’s just voter suppression and discrimination.”
