In addition to raising funds to support the American Cancer Society, Gilmer ISD students and staff learned about cancer prevention and how physical activity, good nutrition, sun safety, and tobacco prevention all help to create a healthy lifestyle.

Gilmer Elementary recently participated in the American Cancer Society’s Relay Recess, an event which gave students and staff the opportunity to make a difference in the fight against cancer in their own community.

Elementary students donated over $4,000 to the American Cancer Society. Gilmer Elementary students were deemed superheroes for their amazing contributions.

As promised, because the school met its goal, the GISD coaches and Principal Wink dressed up as superheroes at a balloon-release ceremony.

More than 1,200 balloons were released in honor of those who have battled cancer. The balloon release was an opportunity to recognize those who have been touched by cancer, as well as celebrate the money that was raised.
