Schools plan to honor veterans

Several events have been scheduled locally to honor veterans on Veterans Day, Nov. 11.

“In Gilmer, we have a free hamburger and hot-dog dinner for all veterans and spouses. This is sponsored jointly by Disabled American Veterans and Veterans of Foreign Wars local chapters,” said Jim Eitel of the VFW.

It begins at 11:30 a.m. at the DAV Building on U.S. 271 North (across from Waal-Mart) and ends about 1:30 p.m.

County schools that have an event include:

• Big Sandy: 10 a.m. on Nov. 10. After the program, lunch will be served to veterans and spouses.

• Harmony: 10 a.m. on Nov. 10. After the program, lunch will be served to veterans and spouses.

• Union Grove: 9 a.m. on Nov. 13. Prior to the program coffee and pastries will be served. After the program, lunch will be served.

• Union Hill: 11 a.m. on Nov. 11. Lunch will be served after the program.

• Gladewater: 9 a.m. on Nov. 11. Primary School Auditorium on Gay Avenue. Coffee and donuts before the ceremony.

• Ore City: 10 a.m., reception to follow. or New Diana.

Other events of interest:

Longview has an event in Lobo Stadium this Saturday at 6:30 p.m. This is open to everyone.

The International Alert Academy near Big Sandy has a ceremony and dinner on Monday, Nov. 9, at 6:30 p.m. This is open to spouses and children, public servants and all veterans.
