Preceptor Pi Nu Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi bade farewell to summer at their first meeting of the year with a sunset picnic in the park at Lake Gilmer on Monday, Sept. 27.

Dianne Wren presented a program entitled “Get Organized.” Innovative and low tech methods for eliminating clutter, organizing paperwork, and maintaining an orderly environment were explored.

After the business meeting, member Donna Varnado, principal of Big Sandy Elementary School, presented the chapter's first Hero for Kids Award. Patti Rozell received her Bachelor's degree from Sam Houston State University and is currently in her 29th year of teaching. She has taught in Houston, at Harmony Schools for 2 ½ years, and has been at Big Sandy since 1983.

Ms. Rozell has taught on the high school level, eighth grade, sixth grade, fourth grade and is currently teaching second grade. Ms. Varnado emphasized that Ms. Rozell is passionate about everything she does, with a tremendous work ethic, and a drive to make the lives of her students better. She is their encourager, motivator, cheerleader and hero.

The criteria for recognition include the following: the teacher exemplifies servant leadership, makes a positive difference daily as an educator, goes the extra mile both in and out of the classroom, works tirelessly for the child in need, and unselfishly devotes time to improving children's lives.

Selection of honorees will be based on campus principal's recommendation.

A teacher in each Upshur County School will be recognized throughout the year by the Chapter.

Roberta Bass was welcomed as new member of the Chapter.

The group enjoyed a picnic menu of fried chicken, potato salad, baked beans, pimento cheese sandwiches, s'mores brownies and cold drinks.

Those attending included Shelia Bledsoe, Diane Chevalier, Racheal Roberts, Becky Skinner, Becky Starnes, Donna Varnado, Shirley Wilson, Dianne Wren, Roberta Bass, Ruth Ann Eaton and Patti Rozell.
