Meet Dallas residents benefiting from the Affordable Care Act


Dallas, Texas – On the heels of new enrollment numbers being released by Health and Human Services,February 13th, local OFA volunteers will be taking part in a national day of action to make sure fellow community members have the tools and information they need to get enrolled in quality, affordable health insurance. 



U.S. Congressman Marc Veasey - representing Texas Congressional District 33, which contains roughly 265,000 uninsured citizens, the highest percentage of uninsured in any Congressional District nationally.


Albert DeCall - ACA Partner Engagement Coordinator, Organizing for Action Texas 


Jason Roberts - Was unable to attain insurance due to a testicular cancer diagnosis, Dallas area resident, small business owner and cancer survivor was able to receive affordable coverage in the health care market place. 


Angela Johnson – Were unable to find healthcare for her and her husband Henry, both of whom have pre-existing conditions (Henry, still dealing with injuries sustained while playing football at Florida State University) were unable to afford the $4,000/month COBRA payments after Angela was laid off from her job. As a result of the options offered by the healthcare exchanges, Angela and her husband now receive subsidized coverage for less than $50/month. 


Lemlem Berhe - 57 year old Ethiopian immigrant, finally able to retire from a job that had been her only means of accessing affordable healthcare options now has coverage through the market place with a monthly payment of $119.25 and a $500.00 deductible she's very pleased with.

Enrollment in the marketplaces extends through March, but for those who want coverage to start on March 1, they need to sign up by February 15. OFA volunteers across the country will be out on Thursday to make sure their neighbors are equipped with the tools and information they need to get covered. 


More Facts about the Affordable Care Act:

Over 661, 690 are uninsured in Dallas, Texas. Of the 2,170,834 people in Dallas County under the age of 65, 31.5 percent are uninsured. 

Almost 50 percent of the uninsured are women, with 314,700  uninsured in Dallas. 

The communities that will be most affected by the Affordable Care Act and Medicaid Expansion are young people (ages 18 - 39) with 348,388 uninsured and the Hispanic Community with 414,865 uninsured in Dallas. 

305,216 uninsured in Dallas are eligible for subsidies or tax credits to reduce the cost of health coverage, providing affordable plans for Dallas families.
