(Longview, Texas)—LeTourneau University announces author, musician and Bible scholar Dr. Steve Guthrie will speak at 10:50 a.m. Monday, Oct. 28, in the S.E. Belcher Jr. Chapel and Performance Center, 2100 S. Mobberly Ave., in Longview.

Guthrie is an associate professor of theology at  the Belmont School of Religion, the largest Christian university in Tennessee. Before he began his service at Belmont in 2005, he taught for five years at the University of St. Andrews in St. Andrews, Scotland. In Scotland, he was on the faculty of the Institute for Theology, Imagination and the Arts, and he came to Belmont to help launch a new program in religion and the arts.

Guthrie earned an undergraduate degree in music theory with distinction from the University of Michigan and worked several years as a musician before he entered the field of theology.  He earned his master’s degree in divinity from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School and his doctorate in theology from University of St. Andrews in 2000 with his dissertation that offered a Christian theological framework for understanding the ubiquity of music in human culture and worship while evaluating the doctrine of creation in light of musical practice.

Still in tune with his musical background, Guthrie regularly plays with the band SixtyFour, a Beatles cover band, in Nashville, Tenn.
