A flag ceremony was held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Veterans Day, at the Historic Upshur Museum on the northeast corner of the square in downtown Gilmer.

The ceremony honored Commander Charles Madison Davis Jr. (June 17, 1935 to June 24, 2005). He was the brother of Sara Dumas of Gilmer and she and her family are flying the flag.

Capt. Mack Board and cadets from the Gilmer High School Junior ROTC will conduct the ceremony.

Comm. Davis of the U.S. Navy was assigned to the U.S. Navy Clinics.

He served aboard the USS Cadmus, based in New Port, R.I., and at naval bases in San Diego and Port Hueneme, Calif., Puerto Rico, Diego Garcia, Okinawa and Norfolk, Va.

He received many medals and commendations for excellence in the operation of the Navy dental clinics under his command.

After retiring in 1989, he became involved with the disabled veterans’ programs and received first place in his division in the Department of Veterans Affairs Creative Arts Festival in Washington, D.C. in 1992.
