A Gilmer man has been sentenced Monday in Wood County to life in prison for Aggravated Sexual Assault of a Child. He was sentenced by 402nd District Judge G. Timothy Boswell in court in Quitman.

Robert Karl Nunley, 47, pleaded guilty to charges of Aggravated Sexual Assault of a Child and Indecency with a Child by Sexual Contact on April 16, after a jury was empanelled but before the trial began.

He waived the jury trial as to both guilt and punishment. In addition, Nunley waived his right to appeal.

In addition to life in prison for Aggravated Sexual Assault, Nunley received 20 years on the Indecency charge.

Wood County District Attorney Jim Wheeler said that both of Nunley’s victims had been interviewed at the Northeast Texas Child Advocacy Center in Winnsboro.

“The work of the Advocacy Center was essential to a successful prosecution in this case,” Wheeler said. “Specifically, the forensic work done by Program Director Kathy Smedley, as well as her testimony, proved invaluable.”

He said that law enforcement agencies involved in the investigation included the Wood County Sheriff’s Office, the Upshur County Sheriff’s Office, the South Padre Island Police Department, the Cameron County District Attorney’s Office, and the Upshur County District Attorney’s Office.

He also praised the time and preparation put into the case by his staff members, Investigator Jerry Hirsch, Victim Assistance Coordinator Robin Sherwood and Crime Victim Liason/Family Services Coordinator Jalayne Robinson.

The prosecution was led by Wheeler, with the help of Assistant District Attorneys Angela Converse, Angela Hammonds and Joey Fenlaw.

It's good to know that authorities made a firm proposition to this case. Its just sad to know that sometimes people tend to be lenient towards safety and precautions. You'll only realize how important such thing, is when you're put into a situation where your life is on the line. Assault, burglary, rape and more crimes like this has been happening 24 hours/7 days a week. You may have not experience such things however, don't wait for it to happen into your own life and end up regretting that you have not put any effort about the safety of your own family. I am a mother and what's the most important for me is the safety of my family, most especially, my children. So I provided them this cell-phone based safety srvice for self protection that can alerts a monitoring center so 911 emergency responders will be dispatched to the exact location immediately. The selected family and trusted friends is automatically alerted via text, e-mail and phone call. A very reliable application that can save lives when in danger situation. You should protect your family too. Check this out: https://login.safekidzone.com/mobilesafety/?CampaignLandingPage=RelentlessProtectionSafeLink&refcode=relentlessprotection&a_aid=514ae0d65ccc2
