Gilmer, Texas, Sept. 18, 2012 – Cortney Reid, 19, has endured health problems her entire life. As a baby, she was diagnosed with focal sclerosing glomerulosclerosis, which caused scar tissue to build up in her kidneys. Doctors now say a kidney transplant is critical to her survival, and she is currently undergoing evaluations in hopes to be added to the transplant waiting list soon.
Despite her health challenges, Reid is a great student, and she hopes to begin college soon to pursue a career in the medical field. She stays active by working part time as a restaurant hostess, reading, writing and spending time with her family and friends. She dreams of one day having the energy to be as active as her friends, and she would love to go out and enjoy life without constantly worrying about her health.
The average kidney transplant costs approximately $250,000. And that’s only the beginning. Even with health coverage, she faces significant expenses related to the surgery. For the rest of her life, Reid will need follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications. Post-transplant medications are very pricey, and they’re as critical to her survival as the transplant itself.
To overcome these financial challenges, Reid turned to the National Foundation for Transplants (NFT) for assistance. NFT is a nonprofit organization that helps transplant patients raise funds to pay for medical expenses.
“It’s always difficult to see someone battle such a terrible illness, but it’s especially heartbreaking for someone as young as Cortney,” said Kay Horne, NFT fundraising consultant. “It’s amazing that she still stays so active, and it’s wonderful that she has such a strong support system of family and friends. At NFT, we want to help the Reids raise the necessary funds so they can focus on Cortney’s health, not the soaring medical expenses.”
Volunteers are planning a spaghetti dinner Thursday, Sept. 27 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the fellowship hall of First Baptist Church, 304 Buffalo St. in Gilmer.
Admission is $5 per person, and dinner includes spaghetti, bread, dessert and a drink. Door prizes will include the following items: Walmart gift card, Discount Tire gift card, Myscheles gift card and a purse from Roadside Boutique.
