March 2013
Welcome to the March edition of Grace After Fire's newsletter.  As an organization we are committed to keeping you up-to-date and informed about what we are planning for the future. Our mission of Grace After Fire is to provide the means for women Veterans to gain knowledge, insight and self-renewal. We are dedicated to helping women Veterans help themselves.
From the CEO: Lean In and Learn

OlsonIn the book entitled Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Win by Sheryl Sandberg (Facebook COO), she recounts her experience in the corporate world and doles out advice on the approaches women should take to be successful leaders. Most of it is common sense, but one point deserves repeating. Did you know that asking, "Will you be my mentor," has become synonymous with a woman asking a man to marry her on the first date...it is just not done today.

Interesting advice in the era where who you know and having the right mentor/sponsor is critical to success. Sponsorship was important in the military and it exists in the corporate world, too. So what are we to do, especially women veterans who are transitioning into the civilian work force? How do you find someone to help you navigate those unwritten rules and negotiate the office space?

Let me offer an alternative to "Will you be my mentor?" We know women veterans bring tremendous attributes to the work world. We get integrity, professionalism, leadership,

and safety. We are all over teamwork, problem-solving, and
performing under pressure, so why even consider a mentor.

Grace After Fire Family Retreat!
"Laugh Your Cares Away!"
Grace After Fire held it's first Family retreat the first weekend of March 2013.  Over 150 women Veterans and family members came together to celebrate their service and the support their families give while they served.
The weekend started with dinner and a performance of "Good Lessons from Bad Women" by Dorothy Leeds.  On Saturday morning the women were able to listen to facilitators talk about taking care of oneself.  The younger children had a program presented by Mom's Best Friend, the teenagers were supported by Grace After Fire's own, Danielle Mason and the men learned about their "colors" from Barry Waite.
When asked the women indicated that they would love to attend another event and were thrilled that their families were allowed to take part. They enjoyed the panel discussions and loved that they were able to connect with fellow Veterans.

Take a look at what participants had to say!
