From the CEO: Lean In and Learn
In the book entitled Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Win by Sheryl Sandberg (Facebook COO), she recounts her experience in the corporate world and doles out advice on the approaches women should take to be successful leaders. Most of it is common sense, but one point deserves repeating. Did you know that asking, "Will you be my mentor," has become synonymous with a woman asking a man to marry her on the first date...it is just not done today.
Interesting advice in the era where who you know and having the right mentor/sponsor is critical to success. Sponsorship was important in the military and it exists in the corporate world, too. So what are we to do, especially women veterans who are transitioning into the civilian work force? How do you find someone to help you navigate those unwritten rules and negotiate the office space?
Let me offer an alternative to "Will you be my mentor?" We know women veterans bring tremendous attributes to the work world. We get integrity, professionalism, leadership,
and safety. We are all over teamwork, problem-solving, and performing under pressure, so why even consider a mentor.
