LETU TO FEATURE WORSHIP EXPERT DR. LESTER RUTH



 LONGVIEW — LeTourneau University will present Dr. Lester Ruth, research professor of Christian worship at Duke Divinity School, to speak during a special chapel service at 10:50 a.m., Monday, April 8, in the S.E. Belcher Jr. Chapel and Performance Center, 2100 S. Mobberly Ave., in Longview.



Ruth will also present on a comparison and contrast of older hymns and contemporary worship songs during a theological symposium from 1 to 2:15 p.m. in the Memorial Student Center, third floor. 



Both events are free and open to the public.



Ruth has written several books, including “A Little Heaven Below: Worship at Early Methodist Quarterly Meetings” and “Walking Where Jesus Walked: Worship in Fourth-Century Jerusalem.”



In addition to a number of pastoring positions throughout Texas, Ruth has taught in seminaries and schools across the country. From 1997 to 2001, he was an adjunct faculty member at Tyndale Theological Seminary. In addition, he served for two years as assistant professor of liturgical studies at Yale University’s Institute of Sacred Music and Divinity School. In 2011, he moved on from an 11-year position as Lily May Jarvis professor of Christian worship at Asbury Theological Seminary. He now teaches at both Duke Divinity School and the Robert E. Webber Institute for Worship Studies.



Ruth earned his Bachelor of Business Administration from Stephen F. Austin State University in 1981 and a Master of Divinity from Asbury Theological Seminary in 1985. He then received a Master of Theology from Emory University in 1988 and a Master of Arts from the University of Notre Dame in 1994. He completed his education at Notre Dame with a doctorate in liturgical history in 1996. Ruth focuses his research on comparing historical forms of worship with contemporary models, particularly the theology of current music.
