The issue of gun-control has received a lot of attention recently.  It may be helpful to review our 2nd Amendment: “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”

“A militia, when properly formed, are in fact the people themselves… to preserve liberty, it is essential that the whole body of the people always possess arms…”  -Richard Henry Lee

“The great object is that every man be armed…. [a] nation which shall trust its liberties in other hands cannot long exist…”  -Patrick Henry

"[arms] discourage and keep the invader and the plunderer in awe, and preserve order in the world as well as property… Horrid mischief would ensue were one half the world deprived of the use of them… the weak will become a prey to the strong."  -Thomas Paine

“… the advantage of being armed, which the Americans possess over the people of almost every other nation…  forms a barrier against the enterprises of ambition… in the several kingdoms of Europe… the governments are afraid to trust the people with arms.”  -James Madison

“Our Revolution… presented us an album on which we were free to write what we pleased … We appealed to [the laws] of nature, and found them engraved on our hearts… that all power is inherent in the people… that it is their right and duty to be at all times armed…”  -Thomas Jefferson

“Before a standing army can rule, the people must be disarmed; as they are in almost every kingdom in Europe.  The supreme power in America cannot enforce unjust laws by the sword; because the whole body of the people are armed…” -Noah Webster
