On Feb. 6, 2014, I drove from Longview to Chandler for a luncheon in honor of The Rev. Fred Luter, the head of the national Southern Baptist Convention.

Unfortunately inclement weather delayed his plane flight, but he was able to attend a church service at the Macedonia Baptist Church in Chandler late that night.

I was very impressed by the history of Macedonia Baptist Church with its 114 year old history.

A previous church building housed the church on the first floor; and the Masonic Lodge on the second floor of the church.

That is what I like to hear — harmony and compatibility.

A church is a place where people worship according to their faith for salvation reasons.

A fraternal Lodge is essentially a friendship society whereby a cross section of people meet for civic reasons to better themselves and enhance their communities in a positive way.

Many old towns in Texas have a similar heritage whereby a church, post office, Lodge hall, school and general store often shared the same building to get a town started.

I salute Macedonia Baptist Church in Chandler for their past and wish them a bright future.
