Gilmer students' projects in science bound for state

Several Gilmer students have advanced to State Science Competition, following the Regional Science Fair Friday, March 1.

Almost 200 students participated in the 50th annual East Texas Regional Science Fair Friday, in the Devall Student Center Ballroom on the Kilgore College campus.

Local fair winners from area schools (grades 5-12) were invited to attend the competition.

The top projects in each of four categories qualified to attend the Exxon-Mobil Science and Engineering Fair at The University of Texas at San Antonio, March 26-29.

Representing Gilmer High school and advancing to the state competition were Colby Gipson and Tiler Hall.

Landon Henson, Morgan Henson and Cameron Gipson represented Gilmer Bruce Junior High, with Cameron advancing to the state competition.

Colby Gipson placed second in the Senior Biological division with his project, “Missing Link? Water Quality Study of the Sabine River Using Macroinvertebrate & Fish Diversity.”

Colby’s third-year study was to determine if a correlation exists between water quality parameters of temperature, dissolved oxygen, carbon dioxide, turbidity, pH and conductivity and the biodiversity of a lotic environment.

Live specimen collections were compared to water quality to determine influence of fish and macroinvertebrates on the aquatic food web.

Colby also received specialty awards, which included Broadcom Masters Award, Mu Alpha Theta Award, Army Achievement Award, American Chemical Society Award and the WEAT/TWVA Science Award. Colby received a total of $400 in cash prizes.

Tiler Hall placed fourth in the Senior Biological division with her project, “Effect of Hot Water Discharge on the Water Quality of a Lake Next To A Power Plant.” Tiler’s project was to compare lentic habitats to determine influence of thermal energy from a coal power plant on the quality of water.

Tiler’s specialty awards were the WEAT/TWVA Science Award, Intel Excellence in Computer Science award, Regional Ricoh Sustainable Development Award, U.S. Metric Association Award, Association of Women Geoscientists Student Award for Geoscience Excellence, and the United States Air Force Award for Science Research.

Tiler’s cash prizes totalled $500.

Cameron Gipson placed first in the Junior Biological division, continuing his second year research of an aquatic habitat. Cameron’s project, “Spatial and Temporal Fluctuations of Protists and Macroinvertebrates in a Lentic Habitat,” determined the species richness of an aquatic environment and determined if correlation existed between migration patterns of protists and macroinvertebrates and the intensity of available sunlight.

Cameron’s honors included the United States Navy Award for Science Research, the American Chemical Society Award with $50 cash prize, and the Broadcom Masters Award.
