Gilmer FFA held their annual banquet at the First Baptist Church Family Life Center Thursday, May 22.

President Haygan Thomas led the officers in the opening ceremonies in which each current officer explained their role.

Following a welcome by Courtney Gipson, members of the program recognized the accomplishments of the various team members.

Over 400 young people in Gilmer High School and Bruce Junior High participate in agricultural science and other programs taught by the four faculty members, Sue Witt, Russell Thomas, Allison Moore in the high school and Paulette Aguilar with the introduction to the program to the 58 students in the Junior FFA at Bruce Junior High.

This year they were assisted by student teachers Elizabeth Meech and Kyle Keahey.

After reviewing the work accomplished with the various teams participating at the Harvest Festival, the East Texas Yamboree, at various invitational, district, area and state competitions and livestock shows, including qualifying to compete on the national level for the first time with the Agribusiness Management Team, various officers and Alise Nolan representing the alumni announced new awards as follows: Corbin Johnson, Star Agricultural Mechanics Award; Logan Parish, Discovery Girl Award; Travis Boyle, Discovery Boy Award; Becca Grimes, Star Greenhand Girl; Culen Spencer, Star Greenhand Boy; Braden Blanks, Star Chapter Agribusiness Award; Colby Gipson, Star Chapter Agriscience Award; Louren Thompson, Star Lone Star Chapter Award.

The Gilmer FFA Top Hand Awards went to Tabitha Cantrell, Jace Daniel, Madeline Oller and Blake Rice.

The Go Get ’Em Award this year went to Garrett Parish.

Alise Nolan of the FFA Alumni announced the Gilmer FFA All Around Member went to Haygan Thomas.

Gilmer FFA Alumni Scholarships went to Catherine Williams and Garrett Parish.

Haygan Thomas received Dennis Haley Memorial Scholarship

Hank Nelson earned the Outstanding Officer Award, while Haygan Thomas picked up the Dekalb Award for the Outstanding Senior.

In addition, five adult members of the community were named Honorary Chapter Farmers for their contributions to the program. This year’s Honorary Chapter Farmers are Sarah Heflin, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Williams, and Mr. and Mrs. Todd Parish.

After announcing the officers for 2014-2015, the banquet closed with the closing ceremonies conducted by the new officers.
